Fishing, hmm? Why would you Fish? What’s it got to offer? Mastery? Sure. But it also make things much, much easier in the way of gathering Glim to give you access to various sails, pets, mounts, and other wonderful goodies located in the Treasure Isles.

Fish n Ships, released in the month of March, brought a new hobby with it, as in the patch name – Fishing. The new “profession” is a good way of gathering Glim, which can be taken to the Pirate vendors in the Treasure Isles for your pets, sails, mounts, etc.

Getting started with Fishing, you’ll need 290 Glim. This will be enough for you to buy the basic Fishing Rod and 10 Lures (each single Lure is 9 Glim.) You can fish in any water, with the ability to expand on that by gathering Ancient Scales, as well as other various materials. There is a fishing rod for every liquid type except for Plasma (Neon City “water”)

There is a strange exception to this rule, though. In the Nautical Assembler in the Hub, you are able to craft a Lady of the Lake Fishing Rod. This Fishing Rod is only effective in water, but unlocks special Rare fish, which are only accessible using this rod. They are all Rares, and instead of offering Ancient Scales, they offer Enchanted Scales. At the time of writing, Enchanted Scales are only useful for crafting the Enchanted Jellyfish mount.

To actually fish, you need to be in front of a pool of water (or lava or chocolate), and hold F (Default control). Aim your lure to the desired location, and release F. The bobber will sit there until a fish has been caught. To catch it, press F again. Remember, though, that if you “catch” too early, and there’s nothing there, the lure will still be consumed. Sometimes, however, you will recieve an Old Boot, which is useless except for crafting the four Boot pets (Sorcerous Shoe, Cardio Companion, Foreman Footwear, Steely Sabaton).

Fishing in this game takes about 30 seconds per lure you use. There is no way of speeding this up. You’ll be sitting there for between 20 and 35 seconds before you catch a fish. However, there are other influences for getting Rares. These requirements range from elevation, to biome, or some twisted combination of these.

For example, the Deep Sea Merthing, an Enchanted Rare, requires you to be at an elevation below 20. This can be seen by using the /loc command, though how I usually do it, is dig a pit into the ocean so I am in a dry area (not swimming), and the water is pouring in. This is low enough for me to catch the Merthing and avoid monsters at the same time.

Glim turns over at a very quick rate in Fishing, so a very efficient way to do it is get a good starting fund (~1500 Glim), and buy your basic Rod and 100 Lures. This will grant you plenty of time to get a Rare as well as enough Commons and Uncommons to level out, and exceed the amount of Glim spent, even if you don’t get a Rare.

There are three tiers of fish. There’s Common, Uncommon, and Rare. Commons have a tendency of giving 3 to 10 Glim, Uncommons give more Glim, as well as additional materials (School of Fish also granting one Blank Scroll, for example), and Rares giving 1000 Glim, and one Ancient Scale. Regarding Mastery points, a Common gives five Mastery, an Uncommon gives ten, and a Rare gives 25.

As mentioned above, Ancient Scales are used to create different Fishing Rods, as well as the SS Corgi and SS Blocksides, a Galleon-type and Clipper-type, requiring five and ten Scales respectively. Once you have unlocked a new Rod, you can fish in that liquid with any Rod. This means that you do not need to be using the Lava Fishing Rod to fish in Lava, and the same goes for Chocolate.
