How to manually set your IPD in PSVR

There are a lot of people out there who are interested in the PlayStation VR, but don’t know how to get the most out of the experience. There are a lot of things you can do to step up your game using the two PlayStation Move controllers, but the most important thing can be done without having to touch your TV or play the game. You can adjust the inter-pupillary distance (IPD) in the settings menu, but what is it? How does it work? And how do you actually go about doing it? All of this and more can be found in this guide.

The PlayStation VR comes with a single changeable focus distance (IFD) option, which must be set to 50mm for the best IPD match with the VR headset. You can check the minimum IPD distance using the “PlayStation VR System Setup” menu option, as well as by inspecting the lens on the headset:

You may not have heard about the inner screen distance (ISD) in VR, but it’s an important setting when setting up your HMD.

Unlike the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, PlayStation VR lacks a slider or dial that allows you to manually adjust the interpupillary distance (IPD) in your headset. Instead, PSVR includes software that captures a photo of your face and allows you to move crosshairs over your eyes. Everything else is taken care of automatically. Unfortunately, this procedure isn’t entirely precise, and it may take many attempts to get it perfect.

Why should you be concerned about IPD? If it’s not set up correctly, your picture will be fuzzy, causing eye strain and headaches. Reddit user Vlaid produced a chart that demonstrates how to manually (but not physically) adjust the interpupillary distance in PlayStation VR to achieve the ideal IPD and picture. It works perfectly and is much more accurate than depending on software.

Measure the size of your pupils.

The first step is to use a real ruler and a mirror to measure the distance between your eyes.

1. Hold the ruler directly behind your eyes, just above your nose.
2. Your left eye should be closed.
3. Line the end of the ruler up with the middle of your right pupil while looking straight into it. Do not shift the ruler from this point forward.
4. Close your right eye and open your left.
5. Look into your left pupil and take a measurement in millimeters.

This is your interpupillary distance, which will be utilized in the next section. Make a note of it!

Set your PlayStation 4’s IPD manually.

Now that you’ve determined your IPD using the technique described above, you can go to your PS4 and manually adjust it using the chart.

1. Make a selection of options.
2. Choose your devices.

   

3. Select PlayStation VR from the options.
4. Choose Measure Eye-to-Eye Distance from the drop-down menu.

   

5. Next should be selected.
6. Choose OK.

   

7. Choose the option to take photos. It’s worth noting that you don’t have to be near the camera to accomplish this; just snap a photo of whatever is in the room.
8. Select Yes, and then Confirm.

   

9. Choose OK.
10. Use the D-pad to move the left crosshair in the left camera a specific number of times — check the table below for an estimate of how many clicks you’ll need. If your IPD is 59mm, for example, you should shift the left crosshair five clicks to the right.

    

11. On your controller, press X.
12. To return the right crosshair on the left camera to its normal position, press X on your controller once again.

    

13. The left crosshair in the right camera should be moved the same amount of times as the left crosshair in the left camera. For instance, I’ll shift the left crosshair five clicks to the right once again.
14. On your controller, press X.

    

15. To return the right crosshair on the right camera to its default position, press X on your controller once again.
16. Choose OK.

    

Your interpupillary distance will now be adjusted to the same value as the ruler measurement.

For your convenience, I’ve included a copy of the chart. The amount of clicks relates to how many times you use the D-pad on your DualShock 4 controller to move the left crosshair in both cameras.
